the looks of my life, the looks of my loves, and what I look like

i love the look on jaren’s face when we are at a party and I catch him staring at me from across the room, looking at me like he is seeing me for the first time. i love the smile i get from gunnar when we are on the carpet playing cars, trains, or dinosaurs; he stares at me amazed, like i am the coolest mom who has motorized and prehistoric sounds coming from my mouth. i am in love with the look i get from my new baby girl each morning when i get her out of bed; she beams because i am someone special to her. i love my parents’ faces when i walk through the doors of home after having been gone for a long time; their eyes fill with love, and i see a reminiscent comfort. i love the expression my sister gives when she realizes the adoption cleared; they will be getting another baby.  i love the weary grin on my brother’s face as he crosses the finish line of his 64th marathon.  i love the surprise on my girlfriend’s face when i gift her our favorite lip gloss we thought was discontinued. i love the look on my face when i find the perfect pair of slimming jeans or the most flattering swimsuit. i even love the look on children’s faces when they get all pouty and sad because they don’t get their way. i love the look of graduation day: the look of accomplishment, success, and the anticipated future. i love the look of a man totally devoted to one woman because she completes his heart. i love the look of unexpected surprises, the look of a fourth of july picnic, the look of first visits to disneyland, the look of falling stars, the look of winter's first snow, the look of a long overdue vacation, the look of winning soccer teams, the look of cookies fresh from the oven, the look of christmas morning, the look of family, the look of mothers drinking in their new babies, the look of unspoken yet powerfully present love. i love the expressions, the countenances, the features, and the presence of life and its undeniably endearing moments, and i love immortalizing them forever with my camera.

this blog fuses the looks of my life and looks of my loves. it follows my expressions of growth, both professional and personal, and it allows you to take a peek at my moments, my thoughts, and my heart.

i would love to meet your look.

eternal sophomores

for some reason i think my students remain eternal sophomores in high school. i know they have grown up, moved on with their lives, and are doing big and exciting things, but in my mind i guard them safe and sound in the confines of room 903 memories. when i hear of them traveling the world with the peace corps, serving missions for churches, graduating from college, competing in national and international sporting events, getting engaged then married, and even having babies, it takes me off guard for a couple of seconds, because, like i said, they will always be sophomores to me, but then i realize life moves time forward, and time makes life happen! and that’s cool. i love all my former students so much. at the end of the year i would always get emotional when i had to say goodbye to them. they just became so much a part of me during that time and we had so much fun learning and growing that saying goodbye to that season always made my heart hurt, for selfish reasons really: i just wanted to keep them close to me, a little bit longer. maybe that’s why i keep them in my head as sophomores, because they had such an impact in my life during that year of their life. when those “sophomores” contact me and want to meet at starbuck’s or for lunch or even just email or text to tell me their news, my face is plastered with a smile at the thought of seeing/hearing from one of them again, and celebrating in the news of their exciting lives.

sam is one of my sophomores:

she moved to orange county the summer before her sophomore year. as a veteran of lots of moving i know how tough it can be to pick up and start fresh especially as a high school student (i went to 3 different high schools in 4 years. count them…3. it’s hard!) i knew immediately how sam was feeling when i saw her outside my door at lunch on one of the first days of school: she hadn’t found her niche yet and needed a place to be until she did. we didn’t have lunch together for long, she is way to energetic, warm, caring, charismatic, and personable for that, but i enjoyed her company while we did.

she has found someone to have lunch with for the rest of her life:

i am protective of my sophomores, when they were in my class and when they graduate from it. for some reason i just feel that i still have some responsibility for their growth and success; it’s weird, i know, but it’s how i think and feel. i knew sam wouldn’t make a bad choice in choosing the man she would marry but i had to find out for myself that she was going to be happy and taken care of for the rest of her life. it didn’t take me long before i saw that adam was her niche.

she found it: her eternal niche.

i know he will be there when she is metaphorically waiting at the door, needing anything…and he’ll be the one she sits with and feels happy, safe, and comfortable with…forever:

it feels good to have a niche:

and to know that it isn’t going to change like it does so often when you are a sophomore. this niche is going to last a very long time. it’s a good one. i give it an a+.

February 27, 2010 - 5:16 pm Mich - I love that you wrote "she has found someone to have lunch with for the rest of her life"..it made the pictures come even more alive!! great job!

February 25, 2010 - 4:32 pm Rachel - Nuz! You will always be my eternal English teacher... even now that you have your own "real" children, I will always think of you as the nurturing, confidence-boosting, advice-giving, yearbook-ing RAD teacher that I love with all my heart <3 So glad everything is going so well for you, you deserve everything and more!!

February 25, 2010 - 3:37 pm Tracy - they are going to love these!!!! such pretty light!

February 25, 2010 - 3:23 pm cari - really great photos! They make a really great looking couple. It makes me smile to know how much you loved your students. I had a teacher in 6th and 8th grade that was a life line for me. He took the time to listen and help me through tough social issues with a conversation, or words of encouragement written on my graded tests. He came to our wedding but I haven't seen him in years. I will never forget him! I bet many of your students feel the same way about you!

February 25, 2010 - 11:40 am Krissy - Beautiful as always Kamee! Amazing!

February 25, 2010 - 9:57 am Bethany - Well - you did it again my friend!! Not that I am surprised, just saying!! Anyway, like Joy, I love the location!! That is my dream location!! Although you were obviously in sunny CA, I felt like I was in Kansas for a moment!! The flare on these is phenomenal!! Must.learn.that!! And the third one from the bottom - where it was obviously getting dark but the lighting on their faces is so perfect! How did you do that?! I have to look at your posts twice, once reading and scanning the images and then again to soak the images in!! :) How lucky you are to have so many connections! I wish Sam and Adam the best! Enjoy your photos - they rock!! :)

February 25, 2010 - 8:10 am Joy - Do you think that pretty chair would fit into your carry-on to come out to the AZ Workshop next month? WOW, beautiful people and pictures. I love the starkness of the location. It could be anywhere in rural America, but I'd guess you just drove over a hill in suburbia and found it. Very nice!
